Gentle botanical cleansing for every skin.

Some bars of soap clean your skin; this one takes care of it.

The Calendula Comfort Soap is our most universally beloved bar — the one that stops people in their tracks at the farmers market, the one that sells out first, the one that people come back for again and again. It is gentle enough for the most sensitive skin, nourishing enough to leave your skin genuinely soft, and beautiful enough to sit on your bathroom shelf like the small luxury it is.

It begins before the soap is ever made.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) — known for centuries as one of the great skin-soothing botanicals in the herbal tradition — is slow-infused into our rice bran oil before it ever touches the soap pot. The resulting infused oil carries everything the plant has to give, built into the very foundation of the bar. Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), long valued in traditional herbal practice for its gentle, calming properties, is infused into the oils alongside it.

The soap base itself is a carefully balanced blend of oils chosen for their complementary skin-loving properties: coconut oil for its cleansing lather and hardness; shea butter, known for its deeply emollient qualities; rice bran oil, rich in skin-compatible fatty acids; castor oil, known for its ability to create a rich, stable lather; and avocado oil, long valued for its nourishing, skin-softening properties.

Our soaps are made using the hot process method, which means we fully saponify them before adding the good stuff. After saponification, we add the essential oils and a superfat blend of jojoba oil, shea butter, and avocado oil — unsaponified, meaning they remain as pure skin-nourishing oils in the finished bar, conditioning your skin as you cleanse.

At trace, whole calendula petals are swirled through the batter, creating the golden flecks visible throughout the bar.

Scented with lavender essential oil, known for its calming, skin-supportive properties, and Chamomile German Blue essential oil — one of the most prized botanicals in the aromatic tradition, known for its deep blue color and its gentle, soothing qualities.

Why Hot Process?

Most handmade soaps are made using the cold process method — oils and lye combined, poured into molds, and left to saponify over 24–48 hours before a 4–6 week cure. Cold process makes beautiful soap. But we use hot process — and we do it deliberately.

In the hot process method, the soap batter is cooked after mixing, completing saponification before it ever goes into the mold. This means the soap is fully finished — fully saponified, fully stable — when it sets. The cure time that follows is about hardening and water evaporation, not chemistry.

The result is a bar that is gentler on skin from day one, because there is no residual lye activity in the finished product. It also means we can add our superfat oils after saponification — after the lye is completely spent — so those precious, skin-nourishing oils never touch the lye at all. They remain fully intact in the finished bar, conditioning your skin exactly as nature intended.

This is expert-level soap making. It takes more time, more attention, and more skill than cold process. We think your skin is worth it.

A Word About Our Shea Butter

We use fair-trade shea butter at a significantly higher percentage than most handmade soap makers — both in the base formula and in our post-trace superfat blend. By weight, our bars are approximately 20% shea butter.

Here's why that matters: shea butter (Butyrospermum parkii) is one of the most skin-compatible plant butters available, known for its rich fatty acid profile and its deeply emollient, skin-nourishing qualities. In soap, it contributes to a creamy, stable lather and leaves a conditioning feel on skin that most bars simply cannot match.

By adding additional shea butter after saponification — as part of our superfat blend — we ensure that a meaningful portion of it remains completely unsaponified in the finished bar. It doesn't become soap. It stays as pure shea butter, sitting in the bar, ready to condition your skin every time you lather up.

This is the difference between a bar that cleans your skin and a bar that takes care of it.

Made by hand in small batches on our land in Renton, Washington.

HOW TO USE Lather between wet hands or work directly onto a wet washcloth or loofah. Apply to skin, lather gently, and rinse thoroughly. Follow with your preferred moisturizer for best results.

To extend bar life: allow to dry completely between uses on a well-draining soap dish. Keep away from standing water.

STORAGE Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity. Unused bars continue to cure and improve with age — if you stock up, store extras in a cool, dry spot and they will be even better when you get to them.
