The Craft
This Is Not Manufacturing. This Is Craft.
There is a meaningful difference between a product that is made and a product that is crafted — and it lives in the decisions that happen before anything touches a jar.
Every Rainroot Apothecary product begins with a question: what does this skin actually need, and what does the plant world offer in answer? The formula that results is not an accident of trend or a copy of something that already exists. It is the product of decades of accumulated knowledge — generational, academic, and deeply practical — applied with intention to every ingredient, every ratio, every step of the process.
This is what we mean by craft.
Where It Starts: The Farm
Our botanicals begin in the soil of Home, Washington and Renton, Washington — in the rain-softened, richly composted beds of our organic Pacific Northwest farm spaces.
We grow what we can. Calendula, comfrey, lavender, plantain, lemon balm, and more — tended without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, harvested at peak potency, and processed immediately to preserve what makes them valuable. When we wildcraft, we do so with the same care: ethically, sustainably, and only from areas we know are clean.
What we cannot grow or wildcraft ourselves, we source from suppliers who share our standards — organic where possible, always traceable, never compromised for cost.
The land is not a backdrop to this work. It is the source of it.
The Infusion Process
Most of the oils at the heart of our formulas are not purchased — they are made.
We slow-infuse dried botanicals into carrier oils over weeks, allowing the plant's active constituents to fully transfer into the oil. This is not the fastest method. It is the best one. The resulting infused oils carry a depth and potency that no extract or fragrance oil can replicate — because they carry the actual plant, not a chemical approximation of it.
This is how our grandmother made things. It is how we make them too.
The Formulation Philosophy
Every Rainroot formula is built on four principles:
🌿 Intentionality Every ingredient has a reason to be there. We don't add things for label appeal, for fragrance, or because they're trending. We add them because they work — and we can tell you exactly how and why.
🔬 Evidence + Tradition We hold both. Traditional herbal knowledge represents thousands of years of human observation — that is not nothing. Modern research helps us understand the mechanisms behind what our ancestors already knew. We read the studies. We understand the chemistry. And we respect the wisdom that predates the laboratory.
🌱 Skin Safety First Rainroot Apothecary was born from a need to make products safe for the most sensitive skin imaginable — a baby diagnosed allergic to all fragrances, advised to avoid synthetic chemicals broadly. That standard has never left us. If it isn't safe for sensitive skin, it doesn't belong in a Rainroot formula.
✋ Small Batch Always We make in small batches by choice, not by limitation. Small batch means fresher product, tighter quality control, and the ability to give every formula the attention it deserves. It means we know exactly what went into every jar — because we put it there ourselves.
What We Never Use
As important as what goes in is what stays out:
| Never In a Rainroot Product | Why |
|---|---|
|
Synthetic fragrances
|
The original non-negotiable — a known allergen and endocrine disruptor
|
|
Parabens
|
Preservative class with documented hormone-disrupting concerns
|
|
Petroleum derivatives
|
Mineral oil, petrolatum — occlusive without nourishing, derived from fossil fuels
|
|
PEGs & synthetic emulsifiers
|
Often contaminated with 1,4-dioxane; unnecessary when plant-based alternatives exist
|
|
Gluten
|
We are celiac; no gluten will ever be in our products |
|
Fillers & extenders
|
Every ingredient earns its place — we don't pad formulas

The Ingredients We Love — And Why
A brief field guide to some of the botanicals and ingredients you'll find throughout the Rainroot line:
Calendula (Calendula officinalis) Our most-used botanical. Farm-grown, slow-infused. Anti-inflammatory, vulnerary, and deeply soothing — calendula has centuries of use for irritated, damaged, and sensitive skin. The research supports every bit of it.
Comfrey Root (Symphytum officinale) The great healer. Allantoin — comfrey's primary active constituent — promotes cell proliferation and wound healing. Traditional use for bruises, sprains, and skin repair is backed by solid modern evidence. We use it in our most therapeutic formulas.
Plantain (Plantago major/lanceolata) The weed in your yard that most people overlook is one of the most useful plants in our apothecary. Drawing, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial — plantain is a first aid kit in a leaf.
Organic Beeswax The backbone of our salves and balms. Creates a breathable protective barrier, locks in moisture, and gives our products their characteristic texture. Sourced from ethical apiaries.
Shea Butter (Butyrospermum parkii) Rich in fatty acids and triterpenes with documented anti-inflammatory activity. One of the most skin-compatible plant butters available — absorbs beautifully, nourishes deeply.
Rosehip Seed Oil (Rosa canina) High in linoleic acid and natural vitamin A precursors. Supports skin regeneration, fades scarring, and brings a lightness to formulas that heavier oils can't match.
Lavender Essential Oil (Lavandula angustifolia) The only essential oil we use broadly — because it is one of the few with genuine evidence for both antimicrobial and skin-calming activity, and because it smells like the farm at dusk.
From Our Hands to Yours
Every Rainroot product is mixed, poured, labeled, and inspected by hand — in small batches, with full attention. There is no production line. There is no outsourcing. There is a wisewoman, her knowledge, her farm, and her craft.
When you open a jar of Rainroot Apothecary, you are holding something that was made for you — even before we knew you were coming.
Have a question about an ingredient, a formula, or whether a product is right for your skin? I'd love to hear from you.
